Here’s a drawing I made on the back of an envelope over breakfast this morning, to illustrate three ways of standing on quicksand: territorial rivalry, amoral transactionalism, and moral community or mutual standing.

    True, though I would say that the rule of law helps to prevent amoral transactionalism from descending into quicksand. Rather, the stronger the rule of law, the greater prevention. I have thought much recently about how useful it is when legal constructs spell out pathways for conflict resolutions.
